The No products found. is currently a third-generation hub, hence the v3. Probably one of the most popular and best-selling smart home and home automation Zigbee and Z-wave enabled hubs on the market.

Starting life as version 1 in Kickstarter the SmartThings hub was acquired by Samsung and they have continued to work hard to integrate it with as many WIFi, Z-Wave and Zigbee devices as possible.

While some have issues with its reaction times based on the fact that it needs to connect to the internet to trigger home automation actions and triggers, the hubs overwhelming connectivity is enough to satisfy most casual smart home and home automation fans.

I have a collection of Aeotec Z-Wave Plus devices which I can’t get connected to my Abode Security Hub so I’ll be connecting all these together and seeing if they play nice.

If there is a version 4 the dream will be to have actions locally processed as much as possible reducing the need for cloud connectivity.

The SmartThings Hub itself is a simple-looking unit but it packs in Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Wifi.

It’s compatible for use with Google Nest Home and Amazon Alexa so you can control all your routines, scenes and devices with the spoken word.

This SmartThings hub V3 version comes with WiFi at the heart. This means if your router is in the basement (which is a terrible place to put your Z-Wave unit in terms of range – but if it has to go there then check out Z-Wave range extender video out) you don’t have to have the SmartThings Hub there as it can use WiFi as it’s principal connection mode. It can reside in a better place to maximise connectivity to Z-Wave and Zigbee devices.

With Google, Apple, Amazon and a few other big players choosing to go with Zigbee as they develop out their smart home and home automation plans, this SmartThings hub starts to look like a versatile and future-proofed option as a smart home hub choice.

We’ll do the full review in the near future but we want some time to try it out and see how it compares to our Abode Security Hub and Home Assistant efforts.
