Best Vacuum Cleaners for Seniors

The trick is selecting a lightweight, portable vacuum cleaner with great suction power and perhaps a cordless design.

Editor’s Pick
Bissell 1984 AirRam Cordless Vacuum

A lighweight cordless vacuum that can swivel easily around corners. You can easily push the head under furniture or in other small openings to get an easy clean.

To help you select the best vacuum cleaner for yourself or the senior citizens you love, we have some suggestions for must-have features. We’ll also recommend five vacuum cleaners that work well for many seniors.

Take the time to read reviews and consider the unique needs of the intended user before purchasing any vacuum.

How to Select the Best Vacuum Cleaner for Senior Citizens

It’s difficult to find one vacuum cleaner that has all features needed by most senior citizens. The physical abilities of each person vary as well, so try to find a vacuum that meets the needs of the intended user. Some features that you may consider when shopping for senior citizens include the following:

  • Lightweight – easy to move around the home
  • Easy Operations – smooth to push over floors, easy turns on corners
  • Easy to Clean – no difficult or time-consuming maintenance requirements
  • Quiet Operations – loud noise can bother some senior citizens
  • Strong Suction – powerful enough to clean floors efficiently on first pass
  • Filtration – keeps dust and other allergens inside the vacuum
  • Large Handle – small handles are often difficult for some seniors to grasp securely
  • Cordless – eliminates the risk of tripping on the cord

Some of these features may prove more important for some users than others. Think about the current and future health and mobility limitations of the intended user. When you find the perfect vacuum cleaner with all the features you need, we recommend buying it immediately. Sometimes, the best products sell out quickly.

5 Best Vacuum Cleaners for Seniors

Now that you understand what we’re looking for in the best vacuum cleaners for seniors, let’s look at five of the best options on the market right now. These vacuums offer many of the features listed here and will work for much of the elderly population.

We included a robotic vacuum cleaner that is great for senior citizens who may have days they just can’t push a vacuum no matter how lightweight. Automating the process ensures the floors stay reasonably clear, taking some pressure off the elderly.

1. Bissell 1984 AirRam Cordless Vacuum

Editor’s Choice

Special Feature: Lightweight, Compact

Style: AirRam

Specific Uses: Hard floor, Carpet, Dual action

Color: Green

Bissell 1984 Air Ram Cordless Vacuum
The Bissell 1984 Air Ram Cordless Vacuum | Bissell

Bissell’s AirRam cordless vacuum weighs just under 8 pounds but feels more like 1 pound when pushed over the floor. It swivels easily around corners, and you can lay the handle down flat to push the head easily under furniture or in other small openings.

It also transitions well between carpeting, rugs, and hard flooring. That allows senior citizens to push the vacuum over all floor surfaces rather than trying to lift it or move around rugs and hard floors.

This is a cordless vacuum, so seniors will have the simple task of removing a small lithium-ion battery and placing it on a charger when not in use. It will run for up to 40 minutes with a fully charged battery, which is adequate for at least a couple of sweeping sessions between charges in most homes.

Finally, we consider this one of the best vacuum cleaners for the elderly because it has a lightweight canister that is easy to empty.

  • Vacuum Handle

2. Shark AI Robot Vacuum

Top Contender

Controller Type: App Control, Voice Control

Battery Cell Composition: Lithium Ion

Specific Uses: Hard Floor, Carpet

Color: Black/Bronze

Shark AI Robot Vacuum
The Shark AI Robot Vacuum | Shark

The Shark AI robot vacuum is admittedly out of the price range for many senior citizens. It makes an excellent gift for elderly loved ones who don’t always have the mobility or energy to push a vacuum through the house. It’s a robotic vacuum that glides over carpeting, rugs, and hard floors, collecting dust and small debris with no human assistance.

What makes this the perfect vacuum for the elderly is the mobile app. It connects to Wi-Fi and loved ones can set a cleaning schedule, switch into deep cleaning mode, and adjust other settings even if they aren’t in the home with the senior citizen.

They can also get a notification when it’s time to empty the canister, which is the only maintenance task required for this Shark vacuum.

This is a self-emptying system. The vacuum will go to its base on the wall and empty itself. Users need to empty a simple canister from the base when full, and that is only necessary about every 60 days. Since the canister lasts so long between empties, it’s easy for loved ones to do that task for the elderly during visits.

This model is also equipped with powerful suction and an air filtration system that removes up to 99.97% of dust and allergens.

What’s in the Box?

  • Shark AI Robot
  • 2 Side Brushes
  • XL HEPA Filter
  • 1 Filter
  • Self-Empty Base

What we like (Pros)

  • Self-emptying base
  • Convenient mobile app
  • Compatible with Alexa

3. Shark WANDVAC System Pet Pro

Special Feature: Cordless & Handheld Vacuum Combo, Lightweight

Form Factor: Stick

Specific Uses: Carpets, Above Floor & Hard Floor

Color: Royal Blue

Shark WANDVAC System Pet Pro in different forms
The Shark WANDVAC System Pet Pro | Shark

The Shark WANDVAC System starts as a powerful vacuum cleaner weighing just under 6 pounds. It transitions into a handheld vacuum that weighs an incredible 2.1 pounds. The handheld unit comes with an extension wand for hard-to-reach surfaces like ceilings.

Senior citizens unable to reach up high may appreciate the extension wand while others may choose not to use it at all.

This is a complete vacuum system that remains light in weight and heavy in suction. Between uses, seniors can put it on the charging dock to ensure it’s ready to go when needed again. You can purchase it with or without the PowerFins, which are added technology to dig deeper into the carpeting.

Emptying the canister is the only task required to maintain this Shark vacuum. Seniors can do that with one simple touch. The design was intended to remain hygienic by preventing the user from touching the dust and debris collected, but it’s also a great design for elderly users who may struggle with levers and buttons due to arthritis.

The downside is that the canister is a bit on the small side, so it may need emptying more often than some seniors prefer. While it comes with a tool for deeper cleaning, it doesn’t have a position to sit on the vacuum and will need storage elsewhere.

What’s in the Box?

  • WANDVAC System Cordless 3-in-1 Stick Vacuum
  • Pet-Multi Tool
  • Mini Motorized Hand Tool
  • Side-by-side Charging Dock

What we like (Pros)

  • Powerful suction
  • Dual filtration system
  • Push and handheld vacuum in one
  • Lightweight and easy to handle
  • Easy-empty canister
  • Charging dock included
  • Suitable for carpeting and hard floors
  • Affordable

What we like less (Cons)

  • Small dust canister
  • No space for tools in the vacuum
  • Buttons are difficult to figure out for some new users

4. Hoover ONEPWR Evolve Pet

Special Feature: Lightweight, Compact

Style: New Version:  ONEPWR Evolve

Specific Uses: Carpet, Hard Floors

Color: White

Hoover ONEPWR Evolve Pet
The Hoover ONEPWR Evolve Pet | Hoover

Seniors with pets may appreciate that the Hoover ONEPWR Evolve Pet was designed to handle a load of pet hair and keep on spinning.

It comes with an oversized canister that holds more dust, hair, and debris than many competing cordless vacuum cleaners. The downside is that it also weighs a bit more than some others. It does feel more like 2 pounds when the handle is released and you’re pushing it through your home.

This is a rechargeable cordless vacuum that comes with a battery. In addition to emptying the canister, users must recharge the battery after about 35 minutes of run time. That’s not the most impressive run time on the market, but it is reasonable for most households.

Note that it does take two hands to get the battery off the vacuum and the power button requires you to bend a little to reach, so some senior citizens may struggle with those features.

Having pets in the home can lead to odors, so many elderly users will appreciate that this pet vacuum has an antimicrobial roller designed to combat those odors. It also has a powerful vortex suction that helps get more pet hair from carpeting.

What’s in the Box?

  • Evolve Pet
  • ONEPWR 4.0 Ah MAX Battery
  • Charger

What we like (Pros)

  • Power vortex suction
  • Antimicrobial brush roll

5. Dirt Devil Endura Reach Bagless Upright Vacuum Cleaner

Special Feature: Large Dirt Cup, Endura Filtration System, Quick Release Extension Wand, Bagless

Style: Endura Reach

Specific Uses: Dual Action

Color: Red

Dirt Devil Endura Reach
The Dirt Devil Endura Reach | Dirt Devil

We recommend the Dirt Devil Endura Reach for seniors who want a full-sized vacuum and can handle pushing 9 pounds. This is a lightweight vacuum that offers the size and power that comes with an upright vacuum rather than a stick vacuum.

It’s also more affordable than all other options on our list, so it’s perfect for elderly users with a limited budget.

What makes this one of the best vacuum cleaners for senior citizens? It comes down to simple features that make it easier to use a full-sized vacuum cleaner with powerful suction that glides over hard floors and carpeting.

This model comes with a 20-foot cord, which is much longer than many competing vacuum cleaners. A longer cord allows seniors to cover more space without unplugging the cord and finding a new outlet. That feature can save seniors time while allowing the elderly to sweep floors faster.

This vacuum also comes with a rinsable filter. Instead of changing it and buying new ones, users simply rinse it with water and allow it to dry occasionally. That is the only maintenance required besides emptying the canister as needed.

This vacuum comes with onboard tools that make it easier to reach further and deep clean. Seniors can simply not use those tools if they’re too difficult to attach.

What’s in the Box?

  • Dusting Brush
  • Extension wand
  • Crevice Tool

What we like (Pros)

  • Full-sized vacuum
  • Under $100 at full retail price
  • Easy clean filter
  • Powerful suction
  • Simple to empty canister
  • 20-foot cord
  • On-board tools

What we like less (Cons)

  • 9-pound unit too heavy for some elderly

  1. I am disappointed that there is not a canister option given. Having to hold a wand and a unit (even if a mini) is cumbersome for me as an older woman. I find that uprights, when connected to tools via the hose, are subject to tipping over. Larger uprights that have tools and hoses are more cumbersome than a small canister such as the Dyson, for instance.
