Focal, the French high-end audio brand, has just updated the Utopia headphones series. This flagship series will go by the name of just ‘Utopia.’
Focal Utopia is a full-range speaker driver with ‘M’-shaped, pure Beryllium dome: pure, dynamic and perfectly balanced sound.
But the naming is not the only thing that got updated. The series has just got a new pair of Utopia headphones that saw major upgrades in terms of acoustics and aesthetics.
The 2022 Utopia from Focal has the same high-end technologies that the brand utilized for its flagship open-back headphones. And it still has the same build of premium materials. However, that is not a bad thing at all!
If you take a look at the 2016 Utopias, they have all achieved a 5-star rating from most of the reviewers. Many were impressed with the finest build quality that the units had.
So, what makes Utopia 2022 different? Firstly, Focal has handcrafted the new headphones and given them a fresh new look.
Next, there is a honeycomb styling on the body of the headphones, which makes the headphones look premium and visually appealing. So, the design basically makes the new Utopia sit comfortably in the flagship lineup of Focal.
Now, if you are wondering what else the rest of the lineup contains, it consists of the closed-back Celestee and Stellia headphones and open-backed Clear Mg headphones.
Nonetheless, according to Focal, the honeycomb grille of the new Utopia “aims to deliver a more open sound, with greater driver movement.”
Under the driver’s hood, there is a new voice coil of aluminum and copper. The latter is there to improve the reliability of the headphones, while the former is there to make the headphones lightweight.
The brand furthermore says the metal alloy is there to offer “a rejuvenated sound signature, that lends even greater neutrality, with powerful bass and more mellow treble.”
In comparison, the new Utopia headphone is said to be more lightweight than its previous model. But, if you look through the specs, you will notice that both the new and old model weighs 490 grams.
So, what is the catch? Actually, the sliding yoke is from recycled carbon, which helps to distribute the weight of the headphones more evenly. As a result, the headphones are comfortable to wear.
Furthermore, the drivers have an M-shaped nature, and there are M-shaped grills inside the earcups. They are designed in that way to offer more accurate and clean audio reproduction.
The other things about the new Utopia are pretty similar to the previous model. That includes the full-range Beryllium drivers that do not use any active or passive correction.
The result of that driver is a pure audio signal reproduction that has a frequency from 5 kHz to over 50 kHz. And the drivers will deliver higher dynamics, neutrality, and transparency for the open-back nature.
Slava is a man of mystery and no-one seems to know exactly where he is at any point in time. When he isn't enjoying writing about all things audio and technical he can be found researching his next project of interest. The man never rests.
