It’s highly unlikely that someone into tech hasn’t heard of Nothing but just in case, here goes.
Nothing Technology Limited, simply known as Nothing, is a British consumer tech brand based in London. It’s the brainchild of OnePlus co-founder, Carl Pei and his mission in developing the brand was to go back to the roots of technology and really express his ideologies in terms of tech consumer products.
The brand has released a small slate of products now, including two smartphones in the Nothing Phone (1) and Phone (2), as well as TWS buds in the form of the Ear (1), Ear (Stick), and Ear (2).
All of these have proven to be commercial successes – especially the second-generation models that have addressed the common issues with a brand in its infancy.
Nothing’s design language is without a doubt minimalistic, as it’s famed for transparent designs that allow users to see the inside components of their devices. Its iconic “glyph” light system on its smartphones has become some sort of a cult classic as well, already finding its way to other brands in the form of imitations and inspiration.
With a figure like Carl Pei doing reviews for other flagships on the company’s very own YouTube channel, it’s clear that the company prides itself on being unconventional and quirky.
CMF by Nothing
Well, it appears that Nothing wants to make its devices far more affordable for the common person. That would be impossible with its current brand philosophy of premium design, although its devices do fare well in terms of value against high-end competitors.
That’s why they’ve released a Community Update video for the second quarter of 2023. In this, they’ve announced a sub-brand that’s focused on delivering quality designs for accessible prices, as well as quality that’s “very hard to find” within the price range.
The brand will be called CMF by Nothing, and it’s an acronym for “Color, Material, and Finish.” That’s a very straightforward way to name things but also a stable goalpost for what the company wants to achieve in the future.
Its first two products will be released later this year. The first will be a smartwatch, while the second will be a pair of wireless earbuds. The company promises to not only bring the quality of Nothing devices over to the CMF line but also the smooth user experience as well.
The CMF and Nothing arms will collaborate but still operate separately to maintain a clear distinction between the two.
